30 Malicious Emails a Day Are Hiding in Your Inbox
New research reveals just how risky your email has become—and why QR codes, HTML files, and PDFs are more dangerous than ever.

According to a bombshell report from Barracuda, the average person now receives 30 dangerous emails every day—out of the 121 they typically open. That’s nearly one in four messages posing real risk. These threats come disguised in everyday formats: over 75% of malicious attachments are HTML files, and nearly 70% of PDFs hide phishing QR codes. Microsoft docs? 83% of the malicious ones carry the same risk. And shockingly, nearly half of email domains still lack proper anti-spoofing protection (DMARC), making it easy for scammers to fake trusted senders.
Security experts say this isn’t just noise—it’s a real and growing threat. Hornet Security logged over 427 million malicious emails so far in 2024 alone. Barracuda warns that without AI-powered detection, multi-layered defenses, and basic security setups, most inboxes remain wide open to attack. As more of these emails use links, files, and fake login pages to steal passwords and 2FA codes, the risk grows not just for businesses, but for everyone with an email address. Bottom line: checking your inbox might be the most dangerous thing you do online—so click with caution.
