Army Widens Wickr Access to Rein in Risky Messaging Practices

After "Signal-gate," the Army pushes its secure, record-compliant Wickr platform to more users for safer, smarter ops comms.

In the wake of the "Signal-gate" controversy, the Army is expanding access to its end-to-end encrypted messaging platform, Army Wickr, aiming to replace unauthorised apps with secure, policy-compliant communications. Built on DoD's highest unclassified security level, Wickr now reaches more users through the Army’s Enterprise Cloud Management Agency, ensuring safer coordination across military units, allies, and interagency partners. Wickr, acquired by Amazon Web Services in 2021, has already been tested in pilot programs with the 18th Airborne Corps to support complex, multinational missions.

Unlike commercial apps like Signal, which risk recordkeeping violations, Army Wickr offers enterprise-level data retention and integrates with systems like Army Vantage and its Intelligence Data Platform. With new users being onboarded based on mission need, the Army sees Wickr not just as a messaging tool but as a vital part of secure, integrated battlefield communication.
